Yesterday my favourite supplement of the year arrived with the local daily paper - the 2011 Baby Tribute. It features photos of babies born during the year, with their names and the names of their parents. I am always astonished at the monstrously variant spellings used, the substituting of y for i, the adding in of extra ys, the cobbling together of syllables and the preference for phonetics. My top 10 picks this year are Jorja, Jaxon, Kaylen, Gerianne, Brynleigh, Porscha, Ryland (for a girl), Randi-Lynn,, Ryen and Tenley. The winner of the worst set of names for one baby: "Jacklynn Charmay Ileen" Ugh! Jersey, Griffin and "Ryder Evyn Danyl" deserve and honourable mention too. Where did this longing for individually spelled and unusual names come from? It makes strange old fashioned names like Charity and Comfort look positively ordinary.
